Things That I’m Secretly Embarrassed To Like

July 9, 2008 · 2 Comments

Shake your head all you want, I know you have a guilty pleasure of some sort that you make fun of, but secretly love and enjoy in the privacy of your own home.  I have a few that I am very embarrassed about because me liking these things goes back on everything that I stand for.

For instance:

The Bachelor(ette)

I hated that show…and in many ways, I still do.  In most ways actually.  I made fun of it a lot and I made fun of the people who watched it (my sister was a huge target for me).  It appears that she has the last laugh now.  I have been secretly addicted to that show for two seasons now.  I blame it on Matt though, the season’s latest bachelor, because he is from England, and anyone who knows me will tell you that I find English men completely and totally irresistible.  I have no control over that, and I know that the creators behind this dreadful show probably did this on purpose for the people like me in the world.  It’s sneaky and despicable and I hate them for it, but I love Matt.

I think the trick is, they have you find someone that you really like on the show, so that you’ll watch it only for that person.  I recently watched season finale of The Bachelorette and I was very pleased with the man she chose.  He was actually my favorite all along.  It’s not my fault that I was forced to watch the entire season because the guy I liked was always being chosen!  I will even admit, because I am woman enough, that I may have shed a tear or two during the final rose ceremony.  EEWW!  I even just wrote “final rose ceremony” and I cringed inside.  I thought only hardcore fans used the correct term.  This really concerns me.

Instance Number Two:  Science Fiction TV(Particularly Buffy and Hex)

One can usually tell the typical Sci-Fi show viewers (at least where I live), and those were the people you didn’t really want to associate with for fear of your safety and well being…and your life.  These were the kids who if you smiled at them they’d send death rays over onto your table and curse your family.  In high school, a friend of mine told me in confidence that she was becoming a fan of Buffy.  I shuddered at the thought of her crossing over to the dark side.  A few weeks later, she brought me over on the other side with her.  I discovered that Buffy is actually an entertaining show…and it’s good!  I have since discovered the British television show Hex.  And it is damn good too…and sexy.  I still have not told too many people about me watching these shows, and the ones I have told have given me a look of sheer terror.  I figure it may be best to keep this one to myself completely.

Instance Number Three:  The Twilight Books

I feel that the story behind many people and these heavenly books are very similar, so I won’t go into too much detail.  But I was a little hesitant to start reading them until I saw they were making a movie which has Robert Pattinson (who I saw in Harry Potter…could I sound any more pathetic?), which I knew I’d eventually see, so I figured I needed to read the book before I saw it.

Let me just say I was hooked, and I felt so passionate about this addiction that I decided it may be safe to venture out into the open about it so I could spread the love and have other Twilight addicted friends.  It has worked.  With a little arm twisting I have gotten others to read it and they all feel the same way about it.

I felt I should put this on here to show everyone that I am capable of rising above the fear of being made fun of for something that I really like (even though I may be a little older than the majority of fans).  I have since put the books on my Facebook “Books” section, and I am proud.  It has actually inspired other people my age to come forward and say they love it as well.

And let me just say, I can’t freaking wait for the 4th book and the movie.  ….I should stop before I really get started….

No reason to be embarrassed for liking Buffy. IT RULED. People who don’t like the show = something wrong with ‘em, I say!

I started reading the Twilight books for the exact same reason as you. It was one of those aha! moments I get every once in a while when I’m watching or reading something. I saw that Robert Pattinson was going to be in them (looking nothing like his cheerful Cedric Diggory self) and I had to read it. Now I’m hooked. I have Eclipse but I’m saving to a little closer till the Breaking Dawn pub date. (I’m also amusing my self with Scott Westerfeld’s books that starts with Uglies.)

I’m also an avowed Buffy and SciFi TV fan. My favorite current show is Battlestar Galactica with a second being Stargate: Atlantis which may be one of the funniest shows I’ve seen in a long time. Do NOT be ashamed. Join the brotherhood. Or the sisterhood. Whatever it is.
